A WORLD IN A SUITCASE
Grassroots Learning and Transformation
WHO IS ‘A WORLD IN A SUITCASE’ FOR?
Our project is perfect for all learners from diverse backgrounds who have never done any art or storytelling before to artists who want to extend their creativity from natural media to digital art. Participants gain many skills, including improved communication, speaking in a group, planning, art and technology. Through telling a story using words and images about their lives, participants are able to take a fresh look at theirs and other peoples' worlds and make sense of it. |
AWIASC has always explored the themes of identity and belonging. More recently we have decided this is going to be the focus of what we do as it feels most needed in the current climate. Check out our recent reincarnation of our project here. See Identity and Belonging

HOW CAN THEY LEARN?
By creating mixed media art-work to convey the story, either by natural media or via an iPad or both. They can make their image/s 3D if needs be, or they can cut into the paper to show another image behind, write their story on paper cut it out and stick it on the image, scribble to make textures, tear up sections of their images and stick them down again, all in order to create their 'world'. All of it is fun and creative. |
WHAT CAN THEY LEARN?
As facilitators we enable learners to reflect on the learning from the sessions. For example: To create a visual story they have to imagine, plan and decide if what they have created conveys what they intended to say. Then, through showing, sharing and telling the story that inspired the image, learners get feedback from group members, which can make them feel validated. |

TANGIBLE OUTCOMES
With all our projects we ensure that there is a tangible outcome that will be meaningful and needed. The participants initially work individually on the chosen themes and then come together as a coherent team to serve the outcome for the betterment of the community, to design a banner or a calendar or an exhibition, a website or a film.
This process enables a sense of meaning both individually and collectively for a group.
